The anthology 'History, Memory and Migration', which I co-edited together with Irial Glynn, has recently been reviewed by Thomas Lacroix in Refugee Studies Journal and by Johannes G. Kruijf in Ethnic & Racial Studies. Krujif writes:

"[T]he authors have composed a pertinent, highly informative and readable volume that will certainly motivate scholars involved in the study of migration to acknowledge and include perceptions of the past in their analyses of processes of incorporation."

I would be proud if indeed, the book contributes to furthering academic enquiry into the memory and migration nexus.

The book has previously been reviewed in Migration Studies and in Journal of Intercultural Studies.
Thank you very much to all reviewers for their generous comments!
I am very happy to have been elected a member of Institut für Migrationsforschung und Interkulturelle Studien (IMIS) at Universität Osnabrück. I have conducted a postdoc research project at IMIS last year and I am looking forward to continuing my work and co-operation with IMIS.
The latest issue of WerkstattGeschichte journal is out now with my article 'Narrative eines Einwanderungslandes: Zeugen der Migration in australischen Museen' ('Narratives of an Immigration Country: Witnesses of Migration in Australian Museums'). The abstract is available here in German and in English.
In view of recent conflicts about new homes for asylum seekers across Germany I suggest that the Federal Agency for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) take a more long-term view on the arrival of asylum seekers to be more flexible with changing applicant numbers. Moreover, the building of new homes for asylum seekers should be accompanied by information campaigns for the public to better understand the situation of asylum seekers.Olafhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14624921939157044711noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4702960652994298877.post-6450702335487641952013-08-24T11:16:00.001+02:002013-08-24T11:16:08.346+02:00The newspaper Das Handelsblatt published an article on the current asylum debate in Germany in which I am quoted extensively, providing background and commentary to German refugee policies.Olafhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14624921939157044711noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4702960652994298877.post-54876648465974921252013-08-12T23:29:00.001+02:002013-08-12T23:29:42.446+02:00September 4th to 5th, I will attend Friedländer Gespräche II: Im Zeichen der Menschenrechte?

Democratic politics involves a constant negotiation about the belonging and sovereignty of its polity. In Australia, this is particularly apparent in debates about asylum seekers arriving by boat. After a drastic shift in refugee policies in the 2001 Tampa affair, refugee advocates challenged with various protests the status quo of refugee policies and inadvertently, dominant perceptions of political belonging and sovereignty. Crucially, I argue, certain forms of memory were employed in such protests to construct alternative models of democracy, with particular modes of belonging and sovereignty that were deemed more inclusive of refugees. I examine three distinct cases of political memories being used for refugee advocacy: the ‘boat-people.org’ campaign, the Tampa rallies in Melbourne and the SIEV X memorial in Canberra. I show how in each case certain forms of memory were evoked with particular implications for the idea of democratic belonging and sovereignty and with specific criteria under which refugees were to be accepted.
I suggest that politicians need to take principled leadership on the issue by convincing the public of the fact that boat people are not a threat and by supporting human rights at home and in the region. They have the opportunity to join the ranks of Australian leaders who have shaped the history Australian migration policy for the better.

"...playing politics with asylum seekers undermines not just Australian and human rights values; with repeated cries about apparent “wolves” at the border, the credibility of the democratic process itself is at risk. ..."

"... Only if politicians are willing to put aside imagined electoral gains, if they are honest about the minor impact the arriving refugee boats have on a wealthy country like Australia, and if they get serious about human rights at home and overseas, can they offer credible and effective leadership on asylum. ..."
